Ford 8700 PTO

I posted about a month ago about the pto shaft coming out the back of my 8700. Got some rain here, so I tore into it tonight. I've got
everything out except the lower gears. The manual says, "Support driven gears and remove sleeve (14) bearing (15) assembly. The driven
gears (11 and 13) can then be removed from bottom of rear axle center housing." Remove sleeve/bearing assembly - just like that! I've
supported the gears, but can't even budge the assembly. How the devil do I get that to slide out the back? That's all that's keeping me
from tracking down replacement parts. Would love some advice.

The bearing is a light press fit in the housing - sounds like that's what's holding you up. Put the shaft back in with the snap ring, and then have a buddy wiggle and yank on that shaft while you support the gears. It should come out. If not, rig up a slide hammer or a come-along.

Thanks, Bern. I was hoping you'd respond. I thought about putting the shaft back in and pulling. Wish I had. Now, these gears look big, and I'm guessing by what you said before, pretty expensive. If they turn out to be more than I can/want to spend right now, can I pull the ones out of my old 8000? I've got one in the barn with a hole in the #3 cylinder. My guess is they're the same?

I'm pretty sure they're the same.

Wear some heavy gloves while you lay underneath that thing to catch the gears as they come out, and don't let them hit you in the head - they're heavy!

Got it all apart yesterday morning. Found both gears at Worthington in Sikeston, MO - both for $500. Other places wanted $750. Waiting on a couple of gaskets & new bearing from dealer that should be in tomorrow. Only hurdle now is getting old needle bearing housing out of the blind hole in the tractor. It's stuck in there pretty tight. The cage and needles all came out in pieces, but the outer housing hasn't. Once that's out, I can start putting it all back together. Looking forward to getting it done.

Indeed. Thought of that, but I'm not sure there's room for my torch in there. Really hard to tell where the race ends and the cast begins.

I come in from the bottom with a torch. As for not knowing where the race ends, leaving a small gash in the casting is not the end of the world. Put some JB weld in the groove if it's deep and don't look back.

After getting a tire changed on the grain truck and a couple other jobs done, I sat down about 11:30 with the torch, went in through the big hole in the bottom of the axle housing, and managed to cut the race on that cage needle bearing - didn't even nick the housing. Drove in new bearing and put everyting else back together. Filled up sump w/oil and now my pto turns. I'm hearing what sounds like some gear noise I don't remember hearing before, but it's turning fine. Wonder if it'll quiet down as it's ran/used more? Planning to hook up to auger wagon tomorrow or next day and try it out.

Bern - can't thank you enough for your help. Your advice has been a tremendous benefit. Thank you so much.
