Elenco Lockout Hubs

Well I suppose it might be common knowledge on YT that you can put lockout hubs on an Elenco 4WD, but until a month ago I had no idea. Mine doesn't have a clutch pack, it's always in 4WD. I had pretty much decided that it would stay on the farm and off any hard surfaced roads.

Then someone posted a photo of a tractor for sale on a Ford Facebook group, and MarkCT, who has an eagle eye for such things, spotted that it had lockout hubs! So I did some Googling and learned that my Elenco has a differential from a M 37 Dodge military Power Wagon. It turns out that there is quite a large enthusiast group for military vehicles, and lots of people wanted their Power Wagons to have lockout hubs too!

Long story still long, there are at least 4 off the shelf choices for lockouts to fit. I ordered a set and put them on today, it was a piece of cake. I love it when a plan comes together. :)

From what I could come up with, there a 4 hub options. There are the real cheap China ones for around $100. Then there are ones made in Brazil by the company that used to supply hubs for Superwinch, around $180, then the USA ones, Selectro and Warn. The Selectros seem to be in the $300+ area, and the Warns are off the scale. I opted for the Brazil made ones.

Much less strain and should handle much
better when 4wd is not needed, glad it
all fit together it's going to be a tidy
tractor when your done!

Hello Phil. Where inCt. Are you located ? If you do not have a Torque Limiter on your front axle it has no bearing on whether you need lockout
hubs or not. If the tire size and air pressure is correct four wheel drive should not bind or act any differently than a four wheel drive truck. The
Torque Limiter is an Overload Device only designed to slip at 525 foot pounds of torque to prevent breakage of axles or driveshaft parts. If you
have a Torque Limiter on the back of the Transfer Case yours is disengageable as there is three different Elenco axle designs. Full time 4x4 ran
from 1948 - August 1960. Disconnectable cases stared with welded cover axles in August 1960 thru Dec. 1961 then the new Cast heavy duty
axle came out in 1962. Thanks Tony

Hi Tony,

I'm in Kent in the NW corner. My main worry with the 4WD is that I recently got the tractor and have no idea whether the tires are properly matched or way off. It has 13.6 x 28 rears, for all I know a previous owner may have upsized them without thinking about the 4WD. Also the fronts had been replaced I believe, and they are truck tires, I'm not sure if the originals were truck tires or ags. I do have a torque limiter on the axle. It is on my list of things to do to sort through the literature and try to figure out the tire size issue. My main reason for wanting the lockouts was that I'm taking the 641 to a tractor show in Kent this weekend, and my original plan was to drive it, about 6 miles.

As an aside, the tractor came with manuals, one of which was for the Eleneco and has your business card stapled to it. :)

Was the new axle that came out in 1962 an exclusive one just for Elenco?

I didn't realize the elenco conversions went back to 48, were they originally for 8n tractors I would assume? I always saw then on hundred series and figured mid 50s was when they came out

(quoted from post at 19:55:28 09/19/17) Can you post the part numbers for the kit you used? I'd like to install some on my tractor.

Search AVM 408 Locking hubs on eBay.

Hello Mark. The 48 8N s with the new steering box received the first hand built kits. Except Elenco would build a conversion kit for any tractor large or small you wanted back as they were all special order and hand built per tractor and all early ones are very rare. They built kits for IH Case John Deere Massey Ferguson and all Minneapolis Moline 4x4 tractors were Elenco kits installed on the MM assembly line but built by IElenco. It was not until 1956 they received a contract from Ford to mass produce kits for them that would last thru the early 70's. Thanks Tony

Hello Phil. Who did you get the tractor from ? The new 1962 axle was a much heavier cast design built by Elenco because the Dodge housings
were no longer strong enough to handle Fords larger capacity loaders and added load on the front axle. Truck tires became standard for Elenco
in 1960 because they needed 8 and 10 ply tires to handle the loader weight. The tire size is probably correct on your tractor especially since
they already had my manual because it is the first thing I go over with every owner. If you can push your tractor by hand in neutral on a hard
surface without bind tire size and air pressure are correct. There are three charts in the manual for the three different axle designs yours will be
the first chart with 19 tooth and 17 tooth sprocket ratios showing loaded radius for front and rear tires that's how you get the correct air
pressure. I have not been to Kent in years I used to take tractors there all the time. My old 1965 MF 204 gas with instant reverse trans and 404
loader with a cast Elenco kit usually shows up there. It is the only Massey I have found from MF contract where there was small amount built
but sales were poor so no more were ever built. Thanks Tony

I'll email about the previous owner. Thanks for the info on tire size, do you think that at some point I could safely switch the fronts to the same size ag tires?

I haven't seen a MF with 4WD at the Kent show. A couple of years ago a guy from Torrington brought an 841 with an Elenco. I'm planning to take my 641 down to the show tonight or tomorrow, the weather looks good and it should be a great show!
