Hello Jerry. Gas flywheels are hollowed out in the back and diesel flywheels are solid steel quite a difference in weight between the two. I have seen diesel flywheels on gas but not gas on diesel. Don't imagine it would lug down without all that reciprocating weight there. Thanks Tony

Tony, I have one of those Howard gearbox setups I am looking to sell. It has some broken gears. What are the parts worth? On the flywheels-- are the crank bolt patterns the same on a gas and diesel? I've run both with a bushhog and the diesel never choked like the gas did even though the gas hp is rated higher.

The NH parts page shows the same flywheel, gas or diesel after Sn14257. The difference being the transmission application.

The flywheels change at that serial number because it is the change fron coarse spline to fine spline absolutely nothing to do with diesel and gas.

Hello rat. With broken gears I would assume it is one out of an 8N tractor because they were non planetary and prone to breakage. Depending on what is broken probably not much I used to send all mine to west coast. market was good as soil had no where near the rock we have here still maybe not sure as I no longer have any left to send out there. Do you have any pictures of yours ? Thanks Tony

Yes, the heavy flywheel and the 15 splined transmission shaft came at the exact same time,SN14257. I was not aware of the fact that there are diesels with light flywheels and 10 splined shafts prior to 14257

Hello Wayne. The thick flywheels came out with the fine spline but they were not heavy the backs are machined out and hollow on the gas engines. The thick and solid or heavy flywheels came out later with the Diesel engines. You will find the thin early style flywheels that came with coarse spline transmissions on Ford power units in both gas and diesel however. Thanks Tony
