2000 thru 5000 combined manual

Was it a good idea that Ford made owners and and service manuals that
spanned the 2000,3000,4000,5000? It sort of bugs me, I just want to read
about my 3000. However, at one farm I spotted a bunch of each, and one manual
covers them all!

All manufacturers do it, and it's not that big of a deal, since the machines are largely the same in some ways (electrical, engines). Where there are differences, such as with the transmission and hydraulic systems, they have separate chapters.

Also, don't forget about the convenience and cost savings for those owners who had one or more of each model.

My factory service manuals cover 2-3-4-5 and 7000, plus all of the industrial models for that series. In my family, myself, brother ,nephew, MIL we have (2) 3000's, 3400 ind, 4000, 4000SU, 4500 ind, 5000 and 7000 row crop. One set of books covers them all. There's also a 5600 and 6610 but that takes different books although much of the basic tractor is still the same.

(quoted from post at 23:32:28 11/19/17) Has anyone gotten a cd for the Ford 2000-7000 tractor service manual?

If so how is it arranged?

The arrangement might depend on who scanned it in, as the ones on CD are just scanned copies that people have made. They are not from Ford.

Mine looks like it was scanned in the order that the mechanic who owned and used it put it together in. It starts with a table of contents, and then an original 1965 section on identifying serial numbers, model numbers and production codes, then there's a section titled "New Models" that shows the same identification information for the changes that happened on 4/1/68, like the first character of the model number changing from a number to a letter and the change for the leading letter in the engine serial numbers.

Then it goes through the differences in the major sections for the "New Models" in the same order as the table of contents... engine, fuel system, electrical, clutches, transmissions, PTO, rear axle and brakes, hydraulics, steering and front axle.

Next there's a section titled "7000 Supplement" that covers the differences of all of the same sections between the 5000 and 7000.

Then finally is the main original 1965 service manual with all of the same sections for the 65-3/68 2000, 3000, 4000 & 5000. After that it has sections on "Wheels and Tires", splitting the tractor, accessories like the belt pulley drive, and the last section is on remote valves.

When got the first 4000 a 65 model the owners manual was only for it Did not get one with second 4000 a 68 model. When got the early 68 5000 wanted a manual for it and ordered from Ford it come as a combination manual. By doing that just a one time combining them but then did not have to stalk a bunch of different manuals. For the second 4000 would have been a different manual than for the first 4000.

And at that time no computors to scan and make a disk. The dealer did not have a computor. This was back in the 80's.

Back in the 70s I had a couple of Volkswagens. THE manual for Volksies then was John Muir's famous "How to keep your Volkswagen Alive" ("a manual for the complete idiot").
In the opening pages Muir wrote that you should take the manual and read it cover to cover like it was a novel. To familiarize yourself with all the components of your car.
Since then I have always done that - not every word but a good perusal of the whole book.
I got a big original Ford manual real cheap about a year ago. So I spent a few evenings going through it. Doing so has helped me understand how the different models compare and mostly how the 5000s work. I don't have a 5000 and don't plan on ever getting one. But now when folks here are discussing the bigger tractors I can at least follow the discussion with an inkling of what they are talking about.
Because they're all Fords, so they're all interesting.
