Ford 1710 engine block drain valve - threads?

Hi All,

I have a 1710, working great. Doing a bit of service and saw the engine coolant drain valve sitting on the ground. Corroded off, and looks like the hole in the block is plugged.

Question 1 - what tread is the valve? I have a 1/4" NPT that looks close, but not sure about the threads.

Question 2 - How to get the corroded remnants out of the block? Going to try an easyout, but pretty sure it will just turn to crumbs, and I might have to chase the threads with a tap.

Plug or valve, dont care for now, but where can I get the proper drain valve?

Thank you,
Eric O

being built in Japan in the 80's I'd bet on a metric pipe thread

Messicks shows the correct one for ony $16 and some change

British Standard Pipe (Tapered) or BSTP. Our thread per inch different than NPT. If I recall the British standard is one TPI more (finer) than
NPT.

Thanks to JoeM(GA). Ordered a replacement (total $23 with shipping). When the valve arrives, I will measure threads and order a tap to clean out the block.

British threads? On a Japanese engine made for Ford? Might be...
Stay tuned...

if you do run a tap into the hole be sure to have a garden hose running in the radiator to keep water flowing out the hole while you work and keeping the filings and trash from getting into the block

I?d agree with RickB that it?s probably BSP fine. I have no
experience with a 1710 engine, but I know Toyota used British
Standard Pipe Thread on their engines in the 1980?s.
