172 cylinder head

slip knot

The 57 860 I picked up 2 yrs ago started missing on #2 cylinder. Time to freshen up the engine. Dropped the head at the local machine shop. they called me last week and told me its got 3 cracks and suggested we find a replacement.

The head is marked EAF and 6090F. it has a fairly small heart shaped combustion chamber. I'm seeing some heads marked 310100 listed as 172 heads but the combustion chamber looks much larger. I'm concerned the larger chamber would lower the compression ratio and it may not preform as it did. This thing is a monster when its running right.

So whats the deal with 172 cylinder heads?

A couple of pics of what I've got. Notice the freeze crack along the head bolts. It never leaked before but it could start any time

I've been out of pocket today, will check the number on my head tomorrow. It is on the engine out of my 841 that a
t-post went through the oil pan and exited out the side of the block behind the hydraulic pump. I replaced the
head gasket shortly before this happened and did not see any cracks, and as I recall it had 7/16 head bolts but
would have to disassemble it to be sure. My #is 901-233-6993 if you want to call or my email is
[email protected].

That combustion chamber looks very different from any of mine. The 134 propane head is sometimes used to raise compression on a 172

You are probable to far away but I have a head and if you will come and get it you can have it needs cleaned been setting under covered shed. Any way it is yours if you want it. Yantis Texas

Would a 134 head have the EAF on it. I was under the assumption that EAE was the smaller engine designation?

Hurleyjd, Appreciate the offer but Yantis is a bit too far. if I run out of options I may have to take a few days vacation and come see you.

JWA, I'll be e-mailing you shortly.

I can't tell you about those letter designations, just that it has come up a number of times on the external_link here as a way to boost compression on a 172. You may try posting on the external_link and try specifically shouting out to Pitcrew.

Alexander's Ford restoration over in E. Texas has a repair process. They drill small holes along the cracks and drive lead pegs in the holes. I bought
one 35 years ago I guess and as far as I know it's still running.
