Changing rear end fluid and internal filters

1975 Ford 5000 All Purpose Diesel. Does not have load monitor. Does not have dual power. Does not have an external hydraulic filter. Plan on changing the rear end hydraulic fluid. I think(not sure) there's an internal filter on one of the discharge lines to the sump and a screen on the intake line to the hydraulic pump. Is this correct? How does one get to the internal filter to replace it? How does with get access to clean off the intake screen? Thanks.

You are correct that there is a screen on the end of the pickup tube and a filter on the return line. The pickup screen is meant to be cleaned and re-used, and the return filter is meant to be replaced. They are both located inside the rear axle center housing under the hydraulic lift top cover, which is the large metal plate that the seat bolts to and that has the upper lift arms attached to it.

I am not sure if you can access them on that model by just removing the top cover or if you might have to actually split the tractor between the transmission and rear end to accomplish that. Hopefully someone who knows for sure will be along shortly.

On our 5200,(5000 row crop), we remove the left side inspection cover on the center housing to unscrew the plastic line feeding the PTO. Then on the right side, at the lower right of the center housing, remove the hyd pump, the inlet screen is attached. When the pump is out the return filter can be reached through the pump hole.. Obviously the hyd oil has to be drained.

Be sure that the oil is hot and well agitated before draining. After using my 9000 for a few months and doing a double split I found a lot of sludge on the bottom of the rear housing.

i'm not sure either but with the top plate removed, you have access to pretty much everything I'd think....you do on the smaller Fords. The comments
about removing the side inspection plates are worth trying out as I'd much rather remove them and have a peek than have to remove the top cover just
to do the filters......I have no helpers! Next time I clean/replace one, I might just do that. My '65 3000 is getting slow on the lift at low rpms (holds good
with engine off) so I might be doing that in the near future.
