I found this ad on CraigsList last night and will be going to look at it today. It is a 1964 Ford 4000 gas, and appears to be a decent machine. Ad says it only has a small power steering pump leak, but, we'll see what 'small' is. I've seen 800's and 900's listed for around the same price so I had to check it out and to my surprise, an added bonus is all the extra implements that come with it. I need a new brushhog and the early Ferguson 2-bottom plow is a good find alone. Lastly, it says NO SELECT-O-SPEED, 12 Forward and 3 Reverse. My 4000 brochure says SOS or Dual Range 8 Speed were options so is this what he means? I'd rather not deal with an SOS anyway. When did they change to all blue, '67?

I have one just like it except mine has a five speed trans. That one must have a four speed with and over/under gearbox. Handy little tractor. I would value the tractor alone at $3,000 tops, so his package price is a little high in my opinion.

Yeah, I know that. the first Thousand series was the 6000 and was red and white. I post was "all blue". Look at the ad. It is half and half with an off white hood. My brochure is from '67 with all blue except for off white fenders.

The prior 2000 was all blue but fenders and wheels.

Photo looks correct for prior 4000.

Again, an 841/Sherman combination equivalent. No live PTO.

The tractor that is pictured appears to be a 4 cylinder 4000 with a 4 speed transmission and an aftermarket Sherman overdrive-underdrive auxiliary transmission which would give it 12 forward and 3 reverse gears. It would NOT have live PTO.

Looks like a typical 64 ford 4000. The 3 cylinders came in 65. Pictures seam to show that maintenance was some what of a "what ever works" way of doing things.

in this vintage 4000 (pre '65), there was no eight speed option. There were 4, 5 or 10 speeds. 10 speed was the SOS.

The 4 could have a factory installed Sherman combo auxiliary, as this one obviously does. I suppose there could have been dealer installed Shermans as well. Be aware that since this option is a transmission PTO, the Sherman also changes the PTO speed. Therefore, it's not like one can slow the ground speed enough to operate a roto-tilller satisfactorily.

Lastly, it says NO SELECT-O-SPEED, 12 Forward and 3 Reverse. My 4000 brochure says SOS or Dual Range 8 Speed were options so is this what he means?

What brochure are you looking at? The dual range 8 speed was for the later 3 cylinder 4000.

As the others have said, the "12 Forward and 3 Reverse" stated in the ad is because it has a factory 4 speed transmission (can tell that just by the pictures showing the shifter), and it also has a Sherman combo auxiliary transmission that sits in front of the main transmission that has high, low and standard ranges that affect the input speed of the transmission.

Ask about the wheel weights. If they are complete, worth $400-$500 alone. My 4000 power steering was leaking pretty good but a rebuild kit fixed that.

FOLLOWUP:

I went and looked at it, made an offer for $2500 and he could keep all but the brush hog and Ferguson Plow. NA-DA. He countered with $4800, I said NA-DA. My last offer was at $2800 and then I walked.
