Fordson Dexta Starting Problems

Recently my diesel dexta has not been starting like normal. Usually i hold the glow plug for 40 seconds and then it starts right up. Now i go to start it and it acts like the glow plugs isn't working. What could be the problem? Where is glow plug located?

Thanks

I have a Dexta and the glow plug has not worked for at least 20 years. On cold days and after it has been sitting, I use one squirt of starting fluid and it starts every time. Be careful if you use too much fluid you can damage the engine.

The glow plug on a Dexta doesn't work like the ones on other diesel engines. It's in the intake manifold, and you have to spray diesel on it before you start the engine.
There should be a fuel line that runs from the tank to the intake manifold and a primer button by the fuel shut-off valve on the bottom of the tank. You heat the glow plug, then push the primer button which sprays fuel on the glow plug. Then you crank the engine, which pulls the burning diesel into the engine and warms the combustion chambers and ignites the fuel being sprayed in by the injectors.

Hi Mitch:
I went to NAPA and bought a freeze plug engine heater and installed it when I had my Perkins engine overhauled. My Dexta will now start down to 0 degrees with only 30 minutes of freeze plug heat. My stock Dexta primer pump never worked and I couldn't find parts and so I had it bypassed. FYI.. Never use Ether in a Perkins engine. Read all the old posts on the useage of Ether on this site and take heed. Good Luck Don
