Fordson Major Compatability with other Fords

I just purchased a 57 fordson major and would like to know how much compatability does it have with other popular US made ford models?

Also does anyone know who made the 57 major motor?
Was it perkins?

As far as i"m aware the motor was made by Ford at Basildon in Essex, England.

Not sure how compatible parts are to US built Fords, i"m thinking there won"t be many parts used on both, but i"m sure someone else knows for sure. I do know though, that a modern Ford engine from for a example a TS series tractor will bolt in, as all the holes in the castings are the same, although they are not all used on all models...

Thanks,
I think your right it seems hard to believe that ford would purchase and design all new equipment just because they were producing over seas. Something has to match somewhere.

Hi. The Diesel Majors where all built in the UK.
In a follow on program from the Standard N and the E27N. It was built by Ford UK who at that time were really nothing to do with Ford USA. So it is a totally different tractor From 2N, 8N and 9N of about the same era. The engine was specifically designed for this machine. It was a completely 'Made in England' machine with no links to USA. Ford USA did not actually own Ford UK until about 1960ish when they purchased it for £17,000,000. At that time about $55,000,000
Compliments of the season. MTF

Just a few more details to add to Mike"s response:-
The 4 cylinder engine used in the Major from 1952-65 was designed from the outside to be able to run on 3 different types of fuel
1 - diesel
2 - gasoline
3 - vaporising oil [starts on gas]
The engine used in the Major tractor had specific pistons & cylinder head, and was rated at 1800rpm.
The engine was also used in trucks as diesel with different injector pump & pipes; or as gasoline. Its rated speed was much higher.
The engines were used widely by many manufacturers as a power unit.
A 6 cylinder version called the 6D in diesel was introduced later for truck & industrial applications - it was NOT fitted to the Fordson Major. However it was used by County & Roadless in their 4wd conversions of the Major.
When Ford Motor Company England stopped manufacturing the Major in 1965, the whole tractor plant was sold to EBRO in Spain who continued to manufacture the "Major" over there until the early 1980"s still using that same engine.

Thanks Guys that was really good info. Happy Holidays!

Just an add-on to all this info. The 6D truck engine has been retro fitted to a great many FMDs because as there was a choice with the trucks 4D or 6D it would basically just bolt on. There is a later 6cylinder Ford truck /commercial engine that often gets fitted but I just cant think what it is. All enjoy MTF

The diesel version of that Ford engine was so good, that it soon killed off the out dated vaporising oil engine tractors.
Perkins did supply a diesel engine & fitting kit for dealers to fit to Majors which were originally fitted with the vaporising oil engine.
These Perkins engined Majors are very rare today

The Fordson Major motors, be it petrol, TVO or diesel were all built in Dagenham not Basildon.Basildon was built in the early 60's specificaly for the production of the new 6X tractors.Other engines that can be fitted to Majors are Ford truck or industrial engines like 2703e,2704e,2714e,2715e.
