I purchased a 1961 Fordson Diesel Major that starts very easy but smokes like mad, If I adjust the air intake it does get better...mostly white smoke.... but if I open the fuelcock all the way it gets very black again, would this be an injector problem? It also pops once in awhile. any help on this would be awesome I have posted a video here.

Thank you.

Think we need a bit more information. Fordson Major Diesels went out of production in 1958 and became Power Majors, from 1960 onwards to end of production they
were Super Majors. There were subtle differences between each model but the easiest thing to check is does your tractor have inboard disc brakes or are they out
behind the wings (fenders)?

How are you managing to adjust the air intake? There is nothing on the tractor that allows this. White smoke is an indication of unburnt fuel, faulty head gasket
or incorrect timing.

The fuel cock will make no difference to the running of the engine, it is just a tap either on or off, fuel is delivered to the fuel injection pump via a filter
in the tap, a fuel filter on the cylinder head and a fuel lift pump which delivers fuel at around 6 psi. So the fuel flow to the injection pump should be
constant.

The first thing I would check is the injection pump timing. Look under the side channel on the injection pump side, there should be a little opening covered by a
plate. Open the plate and slowly turn the engine until you see timing marks, set the marks at 23 degrees lined up with a groove on the side of the opening. Then
look at the injection pump coupling. The clamp bolt on the shaft should be below the shaft, if it is not, turn the engine again until the timing marks appear and
reset at 23 degrees. On the side of the pump drive should be a plate with a mark enscribed onto it, this mark should line up with another mark on the coupling
itself. These two marks should line up.

Check this first then report back.
