I have a fordson super major and was mowing tall, thick Thisles the other day and after boout 3 trips around the small field I noticed it quit cutting. The PTO and three poing just stopped working. No big clunks or smoking, pto just stopped working. The bush hog will spin freely when disconected. When I disconnected the mower and tried to engage the pyo I could feel a liile resistance and feel it almost engage.
Any comments or help will certianly br appreciated.

I am afraid so.

Something you may want to check first, drain the gearbox oil and remove the PTO
selector plate from the side of the PTO housing. This will enable you to see if
the selector is OK, the locating stud on the selector shaft has not come out and
by moving the gear into engagement with a lever or screw driver make sure it is
going into gear.

If it is a two stage or "Live" clutch I still am of the opinion that it is the
centre gone out of the disc. If it is NOT a "Live" clutch and the tractor still
moves in all gears then it is something mechanical and removing of the PTO
selector plate will allow you to get more of an idea of the cause.

Thanks again. About 8 yrs ago when I purchased this tractor there were a few things that needed tweeked and you guided me through them. Nice to have an intelligent man like you sharing your knowledge for so long. I was delighted when you responded even tho I'm pretty sure you nailed it and that wasn't what I wanted to hear. It is a double clutch and the main clutch went out several yrs ago. I'd have thought that the mechanic that replaced it would have included the PTO clutch. However all of the rest of the work they did at that time was terrible. Oh well
