Dexta vs. Super Dexta

Did Ford make any Super Dexta's with the Simms pump with vacuum governor? I looked at a tractor today that had the Super Dexta grill and radiator cover but it had the Simms pump with the vacuum governor. It has been sitting in a barn for about 20 years. I was not able to get the SN.

As far as all my information from the dealership, including original parts books and service letters, all Super Dextas had the Minimec pump from the start in 1962. The standard Dexta gained the Minimec later in that year.

This same question came up on here about 10 years ago from a man who said he had one from new with a vacuum governor and got quite upset when he was asked for the date codes and engine numbers to help us identify what he actually had.

If the tractor has a vacuum governor it will, possibly, not have the the 152 engine and not be 44 hp. A very good friend of mine in Australia has a Super Dexta with a vacuum governor from new but when he wanted to overhaul it a couple of years ago he found he had got a standard Dexta engine.

So they are out there but it seems that Ford (or someone else) may have fitted Dexta engines to Super Dexta tin work. A "real" Super Dexta has a Minimec pump and an F3 152 engine.

For interest only, engine number and any casting numbers would be useful.

Thanks for that information. I will try to come up with SN when I'm back in the area where the tractor is. I am familiar with SN but where do I find the engine number and date code?

Engine number is on the block on the injection pump side, just under the head gasket line.

Casting codes are on every cast part, clutch housing, gearbox, rear axle, hydraulic lift and each rear axle trumpet housing. They are cast letters/numbers not stamped in ones.

The easiest ones to see are the trumpet housing ones and the one on the side of the gearbox. They should look something like "A12D" or even "3A12" depending on the year of your tractor.

The serial number could also give a clue if it is an early tractor.

Hello Majorman. As best as I can tell the SN starts 09C9???. I did not locate the engine number buy I did get several date codes which are as follow: several 3 J 19 and a couple of 3 J 20 (1963?). From my pics, date codes, and SN I assume the engine must have been swapped from an older non-super tractor but the tractor, less engine is a Super Dexta. I know one mechanic that has worked at the local Ford Tractor dealer since about 1970 and also the parts man since about the time. I can ask them if they know the history on this tractor.

In an earlier post you mentioned a F3 engine. I am aware or the P3 being an earlier Perkins 3 cylinder engine. Does the F3 designate the Ford version of the Perkins engine?

Yes, looks like you have a Dexta engine fitted to a 1963 Super Dexta.

A lot of people think that the Dexta/Super Dexta engine is a Perkins but, while Perkins had some input in the design and assembly, the Dexta engine components were made by Ford at their Dagenham plant then shipped to Perkins for final assembly before being returned to the Dagenham Dexta production line. The engines were designated F3 144 for the Dexta and F3 152 fro the Super Dexta.

Some Perkins parts will fit but others have to be modified. Massey Ferguson fitted a similar engine in the MF 35 and MF 135 but there are subtle differences.
