1958 Major Shifting issues

I have a Major Diesel with casting stamps for 1958 (serial number missing from firewall, nothing engraved on engine near injector number 1). It has power steering and a loader, so I suppose it could be a super major with a FMD hood, but I'm not exactly Fordson knowledgeable. Anyway, the issue I'm experiencing is related to the shifting assembly. It slipped out of gear, so I removed the shifter cover, and slipped the (very worn, almost just the stick now) ball back into the socket. It has slipped out a few more times, and when I physically cleaned out the socket I noticed there is a gear stick sized piece missing from the socket or "cup" of the actuator sleeve. I have seen it suggested that I increase the shifter ball size via welding and then file it down, but should I also do anything for the socket? I can find replacement shifter assemblies out there, but the actuator sleeve w/ socket does not appear to be a part that exists in the world, or I'd just buy it -- I have no real knowledge of welding, so I'd have to have to hire out (unless JB-weld is the answer, which I somehow doubt). Any advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

If you have 1958 casting codes your tractor will be a Power Major not a Super Major. A Super has disc brakes and a different hydraulic system with Draft and Position control.

Wear in the gear stick and socket is pretty common on a tractor that is 60 years old and has been on a loader. As you say, the gear lever can be built up and made a better fit. The socket is more than likely available from a breakers yard over here as there were thousands of those tractors built and the selector mechanism did not change between 1952 and 1964.

There was a shift rail socket on ebay a week or so back. it's easy to change as i did mine right after i bought it because the stick ball kept comeing out of the socket.
