Hi,
I have a live drive Dexta that I'm unable to put the tractor in either High or Low ratio and then put in gear and vice versa. In short if I put it in 1st gear can't then select H or L. If I select H ratio then can't get it into any gear.

The PTO works.

Does this mean I need a new clutch? Any assistance gratefully appreciated as I'd like to get it back up and running.

thanks
Linda

Just checking what you mean. You can start the engine and select any gear but then cannot
get the Hi/Lo into gear. You can put the Hi/Lo into gear but then cannot get the main gears
to select. This could be a clutch problem.

If you can get the tractor into gear but when you put the Hi/Lo into gear the engine
stalls. It could be you have two gears selected at the same time. This is a common problem
with Dexta tractors as, over the years, the bottom wears off the gear lever where it goes
into the selectors. Take the four bolts out from around the plate holding the two sticks,
lift them out and reline up the selectors, then refit the levers. If it keeps happening,
rebuild and reshape the bottom of the gear sticks to fit better in the selectors.

Hi Majorman,

thanks for reply. You got it correct in the 1st paragraph. Thought it might be the clutch but was hoping not to have to split it - I don't like doing live drive clutches!

cheers
Linda

Linda,

Just a heads up about the clutch, they are readily available from after-market suppliers
like Agriline, I put one in mine about five years ago and have been very satisfied. I have
given it some hard work too on my scrub topper. One thing to watch however is the thrust
bearing, the old ones that were fitted as new were a double row of ball bearings which made
the bearing a thick one. New bearings have a single row of balls and are much thinner than
the original. When the new bearing is fitted to the hub, part of the hub protrudes beyond
the bearing and will catch on the clutch fingers. I made a spacer to go behind my new
bearing so that the thrust face is covering the end of the hub as in the original.
