Dexter won't go in reverse

I don't visit this section much as most of my tractors are 65/up -000 series Fords.

My neighbor has my dads old Dexta and recently it's gotten to where it won't shift into reverse, it shifts into all of the other gears with no issues but won't even try to go in reverse using the shifter

He said if he takes the shift top off, with a good bit of effort he can make it go into reverse with a long handled screw driver, but not with the shifter.

Any suggestions on what may be wrong and what needs to be done to fix this issue.
Anyone else ever had this happen.

There's a good chance the knob/ball at the end of the shifter is worn. On mine I experienced the more typical problem that results in the transmission being stuck in one gear when the shifter gets hung up between forks. Or it could be bent.

It's not surprising that shifting would be hard with a screwdriver. If the shifter is engaging correctly it should provide a lot more leverage than the screw driver. That said, I don't recall the shifting being particularly difficult with the shifter removed (engine off) which would make me believe there is something internal wrong :(

IIRC, it is possible to bolt the shifter in place rotated 180 degrees

After looking into it some I've determined it's ether got a bent fork or the fork is loose on the rail.
Ether way it's going to have to come apart.

I am from uk and owned a dexta for many years and I have known quite a few dextas with that problem.. but ours has been ok and I think it is all to do with how you move gear lever

don't try to shift fast! a worn knob will get trapped in both slides, I carry the socket to take off the top when I hurry and get jammed.
