runaway fordson major

We're using a FordsonMajor to power a wood chipper via PTO. Today, we tried to chip a log that was larger than usual, and the log stalled the chipper. The tractor tried to power up, but all that did was start the belts to smoking.

I shut down the tractor, cleared the jam, and started it back up. This time, instead of maintaining its working rpm, the tractor ran at a high speed, started to give off black smoke, and even some flame came out of the exhaust.

I shut everything down, and let it all cool off for an hour before cranking it up again, but it immediately went to a high speed. I can slow it down to the usual rpm by playing with the fuel cut off lever on the Simms fuel pump, but as soon as I let go, the rpm goes back high--too high to use.

Does this sound like a stuck governor? Any suggestions on how to trouble shoot this would be greatly appreciated.

Could be a hole in the governor diaphragm. If you take the two pipes from the intake
manifold out of the pump, put your fingers over the two holes and operate the stop lever
you should feel suction. If not there is a hole. If you feel a suction then check the two
governor pipes for leaks.

I pulled the fuel injector and the pneumatic governor, and yes, the diaphram had failed. I'm delighted to see that new diaphrams are available online.

Majorman, thank you so much for responding to my query; it was very encouraging.

The new diaphram arrived, and was straight forward to install. Once I got the fuel injectors bled, the problem of the run-away Fordson was solved.

Thank you all for being here and helping us keep this unit in operation.
