JD 318 power steering

I was wondering if some one could help me out. I have a JD 318 and the power steering doesn't work. I was wondering what could be the problem. The other hydraulic work when I move the levels.

You should post the serial #, as I believe the type of steering valve used changed during production.

Does it steer, but just with extra effort?

You say the other hydraulics work (mower lift, perhaps)... are those other systems actually working/lifting weight or just cycling unloaded?

Did the steering stop suddenly? Might want do a quick check and crack a hydraulic line on the steering cylinder to see if you have any pressure. Post back if it does or does not. Make sure you turn the steering wheel when checking.

I have a snow blower on the front and it works fine lifting and lowering as well as 75lbs on the 3pt. I took it into a mechanic and he thinks it is the power steering control valve. I found some on ebay but there are two different one. One has a 4 port and the other 5. Does it matter which one if that is the problem?

Hey Nate, my John deere tech. manual list a 4 and 5 port valve used on that tractor it also refers to a difference between the early 5 port and the later 5 port valves. There are repair kits available for those valves. There are 22 pages of instructions for those valves. Parts kits, list seal kit, needle roller kit, metering kit, spring kit, and port cover and check valve kit. Phil
