John Deere SST15 spin steer steering problems

This mower has been working fine until about a week ago, when it started to not respond to the steering wheel. Now it steers ok sometimes. Reverse steering seems to be ok. So I took off the rear frame cover to see if it was something simple. First thing I noticed after cleaning a lot of dried grass that was in every nook and cranny is that the two billows operate when in reverse, but not in forward. Since they work like the rocker on a rocking chair, it is hard to determine which one is not working. I would guess that one is for forward steering and one is reverse, but I do not have any idea which one. I feel the billows are ok since they do work in reverse. I appreciate any help. What should I look for?

Most SST steering issues can be traced to the [b:75dfb20272]Steering actuators[/b:75dfb20272].

John Deere part #[b:75dfb20272]AM133406[/b:75dfb20272].

I am not sure what or where an actuators is. I am pretty sure the billows are working correctly. Since it is getting vacuum for
the reverse steering, I have determined that the problem is electrical. Maybe in the plugs and switches on the billows. I hope I
do not have to take the steering mechanism at the steering column off as I would have to remove the dashboard to do that. If you
can be more precise in what to look for, I would appreciate it. Thanks..

Yes. I did replace the filters. Mine is an early model with filters in a vertical position. I did check everything on that check list. I understand that vacuum is a problem with these mowers, but the vacuum seems to work ok since it operates correctly in reverse. Thanks for the response.

Working in light rain, I gotter done. I was convinced that it was an electrical problem, so I traced the wires from the billows back to the rear of the mower and found two switches. Both had dried grass, but the one on top had so much dried grass embedded in the mechanism that it prevented the contacts from closing. I removed the grass, started it up, and it steered fine. Next time I will know what to look for. I'll bet a lot of SST mowers that went to the scrap heap that only needed a simple fix. Thanks for the posts..Ron

98% of time it is easy fixes, hate to mention how many come here say motor blown, when whole lot time its a connection like you just found out.
