Why are spindle bearings so expensive?

Anyone have a better priced suppliers? Big

It's most likely that they are trying to sell you the complete spindle assembly or the shaft, two bearings and two seals as a "kit". And if they are MTD branded they are most likely made in China.

If they are Tapered roller bearings (like older cars used) ([b:3a69a4be2e]MTD: 941-0107[/b:3a69a4be2e]) you can find American made Timekin bearings for around $12 each.

I bought four Timekin bearings from [b:3a69a4be2e]Boca Bearing[/b:3a69a4be2e] for $41.00 a year or so ago.

As mule said about Boca bearing. Good outfit. Give them a call for the bearings you need. What you need to do is carefully take the mandril apart. Most MTD mandrels you take the belt pulley off and the spindle will fall out the bottom. You need to get the numbers from the sides of the bearings. They are ball bearings. Now really old cub cadets had tapered bearings. Don't think you have them, could be wrong but don't think so.

The 1250 was made from about 1974 thru 1980 and used at least three different decks. Apparently the spindles changed over the years. If you are looking at the expensive spindle bearings I assume that it is a one piece unit (rather than a shaft with two bearings). The best price I could find was:

Some of the other spindles seemed to have a separate shaft with two bearings and a spacer. These are examples:

You make NO mention of the Model Number of the mower deck you are working on.

If I had that, I can give you options.

Decks 38, 38A, 38C, 42, 44, 44A, 44C, 50, 50A and 50C all use the same bearing assembly.

Mule Meat:

(A) That is an assumption on your part, that he is using one of those decks.

(B) WRONG....There were different bearing styles used on Cub Cadet Mower Decks.

Hence the reason why I asked. To get the right bearing for the right mower deck.

As they said there are several types of bearings used on decks that will fit that that tractor. If it has a deck that was on it new it likely uses the unit bearings. That means that the shaft, bearings and housing are not serviceable seperately. They are $150 plus last time I looked at Parts Tree. Personally I would not put that kind of money in a deck that old and when I run into it I replace the entire deck with an older unit or sometimes when I junk a deck it will have a decent bearing assembly or two in it but most of them are pretty bad by this time.

Really???

Go here and scroll down to the decks...

Then come back and tell me what the part number/s are for the 38-50" decks that fit a 1250 Cub tractor..

I will save you the trouble.. It is part number ..IH-ST745..

Then when are done with that..

Go here and tell me what decks part number IH ST745 ST fits..

I find it hard to believe it can't be rebuilt, the bearings themselves shouldn't be over $10 apiece. Take it apart and look for numbers, if you don't find any then measure them and look them up online. The Big Bearing Store is a good place to look, they have good charts and good prices. This is about the size I used in a Murray a few years ago.

Mule Meat:

I do not need to go to Parts Tree. I have all the original IH/Cub Cadet Parts Manuals from 1960-1980 in my Library. Nothing better than the original manuals.

As I said before, there are different Bearings for different decks.

Charlie Proctor, owner of ccspecialties, is a long time friend of mine and he knows exactly what I am talking about. His parts manual library is greater then mine. BTW, ccspecialties is an excellent source for the [b:86c34a1998]ST-745[/b:86c34a1998] bearing.

Nearly all of the mower decks from about 1965 to 1980 something can be used on any Cub Cadet built in those years.
Might take a little bit of swapping mounting parts from one deck to another but not hard to do when you need to replace a deck.

After 40 years or so, you can't really assume that any CC tractor is running a deck that was originally made for that model tractor.

Hence a need to know the deck model number when searching for parts.

Russ, The unit bearing type spindle cannot be rebuilt except to replace the entire unitized bearing and shaft. Look up cub cadet ST-745

I have bought them (used) occasionally on E-Bay auctions - some very cheap. I agree the new ones are very expensive.
