Kohler Courage 22hp Won't start cold

I have a Kohler Courage 22hp that will only start with a shot of ether when cold. Once it has run it will start fine all day. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks don

How old is the gas in the tank? Old gas won't vaporize as well as fresh can.

First thing I would check is the choke. Does it close completely?

Also, check the valve adjustment. .004-.006 for both valves, I think.

If you keep feeding it either, the rings are probably going to break and then it probably won't start without it if it will start at all.
Use carburetor cleaner, its much less explosive and still gets the job done.

I have adjusted the valves, the choke is closing, and it has fresh gas. I thought about blocking the two small holes in the choke plate. Will try carb spray, I have been very "sparse" with the ether as I know what it will do to engine. Thanks for the response.

Another thing to add.... go fill the tank with Hi-Test gas! Makes a whole bunch of difference. Also add just a little splash of Sea-Foam to the gas. Almost all gasoline is garbage today. My Briggs v-tech engines have NGK Spark plugs too. NGK-BPR6ES plugs. These are two very easy things that could help you alot. Give them a try.

Sorry, need to add one more. Does your engine spin fast enough? Battery condition or manual pull the rotation speed must be fast enough or it will not generate the hot spark you need. Try a thinner oil like 5w 20 synthetic blend. My engines spin right over in cold weather. Owners manuals "the newest ones" tell you to use blends or even straight synthetic oils now. I like the blends and have been useing them for better than ten years. We will see what other advice you get.

Thanks, currently have ethanol free gas in it now.brand new Champion plug. Will change plug and see what happens.

I'd toss that Champion. It might not be the whole problem, but it doesn't help anything. Sad to see an old brand go to heck like Champion has.

If I where you I would fine an NGK plug for it. Also if you pull the air cleaner off and hold your hand over the air intake an try to start it do you feel a good suction and maybe get gas on your hand?? If not then you many have a vacuum leak some place in the intake manifold. Shoot it may even try to stat when you hold your hand over the intake

That is why my Gravely commercial C-10A machine I use to snow blow got the juice. Put 100 AV gas in it from the local airport. Good thing about the "K" series KOHLER engines is you can really adjust the carbs all over the place. Had to turn the air mix screw in about 1 / 2turn. The main jet needed almost a full turn in. Now in really cold weather she pops right off. Also put a synthetic blend oil in so the engine can roll over really free. The faster the better.

?Almost all gasoline is garbage today.? That?s one of the reasons ethanol is added is to make garbage gasoline usable.

Clean the internal passages in the carb. The idle mixture passages and the idle holes by the throttle plate.

I know this has been on here for awhile but today I decided to comment. I had a similar problem on a different engine and the problem was that the choke cable was binding and couldn't close the choke butterfly completely. Fixing that fixed my problem.
