I have a CC 782 that I think is terrific, I had it repered with a Kohler Command 20, 3 hp more than the original, It would shut down every 2 hours and seem to be very ot. I decided ti leave the side panels off and now it is perfect. Do you'll think 3 HP would make the difference???? Henry
 
Well, the ducts in the hood/grille enclosure were designed for the orignal engine. (I am thinking Onan, but even if a Kohler twin its still different than a Command engine). Two things have changed:

The Command is not nearly as large as the Onan and probably the air around the engine just swirls instead of passing through and out around the muffler. Swirling air does not allow cooler fresh air to enter the engine compartment as readily.

And the emissions compliance of the newer Command engine probably requires it to run much leaner and therefore hotter than the original engine.
 
782 was built with a KT-17 Series 1 Kohler. Not the best engine ever built. I put a double layer of aluminum mesh expanded screen on the bottom of the frame from the engine all the way back to just ahead of the hydrostatic drive. It kept all kinds of dust & debris from getting sucked up by the engine and hydrostatic drive. I could tell when it started getting plugged with a thick layer of dandilion fuzz and other junk, the velocity of the air getting sucked in thru the throttle lever and hydro lever slots in the dash got really strong. It would still cool fine, but when I blew the mower and tractor off after mowing I pulled the side panels and blew that screen off also. It needed cleaning every 2-3 mowings.

The engine should cool fine with the side panels, and with that added screen stay clean too. 17 or 20 hp makes no difference. I mowed ONCE without the side panels and sucked in all kinds of trash, plugged up the grass screen on the flywheel of the engine, great way to overheat and ruin an engine!
