John Deere GT262 Ignition

I have an older (1996) GT262 that my brother gave me because it quit running. Over the winter, I fixed what all was wrong with it and it starts and runs like a Deere. I've mowed my 1/2 ac. lawn twice this year with it just to keep the battery charged up and the gas fresh. However, today it did a funny thing. When I turned the key off, it kept running. I had disabled the carburetor solenoid because it was too expensive to replace and put a manual fuel shut off inline. But it has been starting and shutting down just fine until today. Matter of fact, I have probably started it and shut it off 50 times over the last few months of tinkering with it. Today, I had to turn the gas off to get it to quit. Obviously the spark is not being shut off with the switch. I'm wondering if anyone has a wiring diagram that would indicate how the spark is turned off by the key? I downloaded the exploded wiring diagram picture from the JD online catalog but I cannot determine where the ignition wire is. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

There's apparently more than one wiring setup depending upon serial number, and the safety switches and diodes make it complicated.

They aren't cheap, but an OEM Tech Manual will walk you through troubleshooting.

Here's ONE diagram I fund on the 'net...

"I can figure it out from this"

IF that't the correct diagram for your serial number!

Keep it simple. Does this machine sit outside or it has sat outside? If the key switch is bad you can unplug the big plug from the back of the switch. Remove the front nut and take the switch to your local deere parts joint. They will match it up. Had a switch go flukey on my old 160. The switches are not cheap but they aren't that expensive. You really should have that shutoff working. Good safety feature. Check Ebay they are all over the place.

Jeffcat, it's not quite so inexpensive/simple here, the 262 uses a combination switch and safety module that retails for about $140!

Oh SNAP.. even on Ebay that thing is $136.oo. They nail ya coming and going. Everything I own has just good old switches except for the Troy pony and the Cub Cadet. They have that MTD push the button to backup module. Wish you can locate a good mower junk yard but not many of them left. I see that thing has a couple of mini fusses on the back. Give them a check?

OK....I was going over the posted wire diagram and even if it is the wrong one it shows you would have a normal magneto ignition system. If you need to take the engine cover off, trace the wire from the coil back to the ket switch. That switch has to be grounded to the dash metal work or if it is plastic there MUST be a loose or corroded ground to that board. When you turn off the key that wire to the coil needs to be grounded to shut off the engine. Could be as simple as a crappy ground. Hope it doesn't get expensive. Damn new fagle junk !!
