My MTD Transmatic Lawn Tractor started making noise occasionally when starting out going forward. It also will do it going forward if trying to go up an incline. It does not do it all the time. It does not make any noise staring out in reverse. In forward when starting out the noise almost sounds like a differential locker locking and unlocking. I have replaced the Clutch Collar in the past do losing drive, it would not move. I can not find out if there is an adjustment for the forward, neutral, reverse shift lever and or linkage. Looking for any and all ideas and suggestions on how to correct this problem.

Thanks in advance for the help,
Bill

NO clue as to specifically what you have, but gonna throw this out there... if the transaxle is belt-driven, belt may be slipping.

Might be as simple as it's time for a new belt.

If its clattering or clicking or whatever, The problem is inside. The part I think you call the clutch collar is jumping out of the forward bevel gear. It usually happens in Forward first, because you use that direction most of the time. Or else the bevel gear had enough wobble it can skip teeth on the input shaft pinion. Either way, since it sounds like you have already been inside once, I would either retire the mower or get another transmission.

On the later tractors, you can adjust the throw of the shift rod, its slotted where the link attaches to the shifter in the fender. I tried it a few times, it never helped.
