I am looking to repower a John Deere 111 hydro with a vanguard 16 hp twin cyl engine. Has anyone done this? Any advice/info would be helpful

I don't know about your tractor. I looked into doing that to my 316 with the kohler engine, to install the new engine I was going have to cut the frame on my tractor I chose not to do that. What Im saying check into it real good before you decide to replace the engine with a different one.

You might want to ask this question on the 'Weekend freedom machines' website. Its devoted to Deere riders.

I don't know about a 16HP vanguard but I re powered my 111 with a 12.5 HP Briggs commercial/Industrial with cast iron sleeve. I thought it would drop right in, wrong!! Had to re work frame here oil fill is, had to file away part of engine block where thru bolts hold crankcase halves together. There is more. What I am saying it might not bolt right in but I am not sure of that. have fun!!

I have a JD L110 and replaced the engine several years ago. Bought an 18 hp V twin off ebay for around $600. New engine, assume a left over from a production lot and BS just put a load of them up for auction.

Seems most US domestic mowers of some recent design with vertical crank shafts are setup on a 10" bolt pattern that accepts single and V twin engines....I converted from a single single 17.5 Kohler to the BS.

All the connections fit the swap except for the throttle and choke cables when swapping from single to dual since single has the carb on the left side of the engine and V twins have it up front. On a V twin swap you shouldn't have to change anything.

I also did a 20 hp Kohler single on a Husqvarna 46" rider and installed a 20 V twin from similar source for similar money. Same thing on hookup. On both I used a throttle/choke setup on ebay that I installed on the plastic side panel near where the OEM was installed.....liked it better there and couldn't find an OEM to fit both length and installation of single handle control.....didn't look very hard since I bought 2 of the same control for both mower swaps.
