I just picked up a non-running 1620 for next to nothing. After a starter rebuild, purging the tank and fuel lines and cleaning the carb, it starts right up and runs great! It’s my first hydro tractor, having graduated from a 182 I just finished fixing up. So far it’s running and cutting great.
The hydro is taking a bit of getting used to. I have drained and refilled the hydro reservoir with clean hydraulic fluid per Cub Recc’s. The original fluid was kind of black.
Anyways, my question. In reverse, neutral and forward up to mowing speeds, the hydro is functioning as I think it should. It is noisy, but doesn’t slip at all until pushing past the forward detention into higher speed. There I’m noticing some slipping and more noise from down under.
I suspected drive belt tension may be causing it to squeal, and so I replaced the belt and the tensioners. It’s super tight now, but still I’m hearing a squeal along with the slipping at high speeds.
Question: does it sound like my hydro is shot? If so, where do I track down a transaxle for my 1620? Is it an MTD part?
