494A JD Planter

I got a 494A planter unit that was cut off a 4 row planter. I have a SA Farmall and I would like to make a 1 row planter for it. I have figured out how I want to hook it to the draw-bar, how I'm gonna lift it and all that kinda stuff.... what has me stumped is how to drive the planter. I went to the archive and saw some pics of one set up but they weren't close enough for me to see how he did it. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks, Jay

Sure it was a unit off a 494? I don't know how you would drive one of those. The John Deere 71 unit is the one you want. They drove off the press wheel. With a 494 unit, you'd have to cobble up a drive wheel to run a shaft. Sounds like a whole bunch of fabrication.

Yes, I'm sure it's a 494. When I got it I didn't pay attention that they were driven off the planter's lift wheels and not the press wheel.

rrlund is right.what you want is a 70 or 71 unit planter.one of them would be byfar the easiest to use.
