273 bale counter

Went to fix the bale counter on my newly acquired NH 273 and its not mounted where the book shows it should be. My book shows it on the side of the bale chute with a spring and chain that hook to the arm above the chute. But my baler doesn't have any holes on the arm or the bracket on the side of the chute to mount the counter. I can't see where a counter was ever installed there.
The counter on this baler is behind the bale chamber where the chute begins. But the little arm on the counter isn't hooked to anything. I can't tell where to hook the spring. Anybody have a set up like this? Sorry, no pics.

I'm in the same boat as you. My 268 had the counter mounted on the knotter clutch with nothing to hook it to and no possible way for it to work.

Some of those balers had a little tab on the clutch that would simply brush against the counter arm, thus makeing it count.

DeltaRed,

Thanks for the info. I don't know if anything will catch the little arm on the counter but I'll take another look. The counter works when I click it manually. Maybe I'm missing something that should trip the lever.

I believe my NH 273 is set up like yours and I'll check this morning and get back with another post to your thread after looking at the baler. My BIL's NH 273 is different then mine with the counter on the side of the bale chute like noted in another post. More later, Hal.

if you mount a piece of high tesile wire to the gear? to brush against the counter arm it wont break the arm. Thats what i did with my press drill works fine

I looked at my NH 273 this morning and it is set up like yours probably is I'm guessing. The s/n on my NH 273 is 154511 so if yours is around there we are probably the same. Don't have a clue when the configuration might have changed as this might have been an early configuration and the counter on the side of the bale chamber might have come later or the other way around. What trips the counter on my baler is a tab cast on a cam type piece which is on the same shaft as the gears which turn the knotters when tieing the bale. The cast cam type piece rotates pushing the arm on the counter down and then drives a couple of dogs down to hold the bale from springing forward in the bale chamber while being tied. I hope you can understand this but just give it a good look and I think you will see the tab cast onto the piece right behind the bale counter. I don't have the ability to post a picture so this is best I can do. There isn't anything to which to attach a spring to activate the counter that I could see. Send an email if you need other clarification if desired. Hope this helps, Hal.

Thanks Hal. I think I know what you are trying to say. I'll have to take a look at it tonight when I get home. I wonder why the counter isn't working. I seemed to be able to get it to trip by hand but maybe I had better put the new one on since I have it.
Maybe my lever is out of adjustment too so that the cam doesn't really trip it.
Thanks again for your help.

I didn't think about tripping mine as I assumed it was a spring loaded counter. I obtained this NH 273 and haven't used it yet but it is hardly been used as original paint is everywhere and the wheel that runs in the bale still has all it's paint. I will trip mine by hand and see if it is indeed spring loaded or I will have to rig a return spring to something. Will share more when I know more but I'm thinking hay is coming down tomorrow so the baler will be showing it's stuff shortly. Good luck and have a good one, Hal.

I checked my NH 273 again this morning and the bale counter which is mounted on top by the knotters has a self contained spring. When a bale is tied the tab on the rotating cast piece directly behind it and on the same shaft which turns the knotters and tieing devices resets and advances the bale count by one. Mine appears to be working fine and will know for sure on Monday (unless rains moves in) when we bale the 1K bales I mowed down this morning. Good luck with yours and hope it works as designed as mine appears too, Hal.

On our Massey #12 there is no physical connection to anything to make it work. Just gets hit by the arm going to the knotters from the needles.
