Bought the 892 yesterday

Yesterday after our 1755 went down the road Dad cashed the check and we turned towards Fond Du Lac (funny thing is, maybe 5 miles from the 17's destination) and made a deal on the chopper. They ran it for us with a Deere 2010 (barely enough power to move out of it's way, but by golly it had a 1000 RPM shaft sticking out the back!!!)

It needs a little work, but for $1300 we can deal with it. We put our spare tire on right away for the worse looking one and pulled it almost 40 miles no issues.

It came with both heads and the corn head looks to be in good shape with not much paint rubbed off it. I greased it up today and tried it out with the hay head, but the gearbox seems to have some slip in it as it wouldn't drive if I got into some thicker stuff. I have to wire the controls up yet, although to be honest I'd rather have hydraulic spout and manual forward/reverse. We'll see how much it takes to get the controls wired up and if the motors work.

The plus is it has Metal Alert. Didn't realize it at the time so I didn't know to ask for the controls for that. Gotta do some digging and parts searching, manuals, etc...

I'm sure I'll be asking more questions as I dive into it. My main goal is to have it ready to roll by the time we have corn. We still have the 3000 Fox for now, but I don't think it'll make it through another season. Plus the hay head really leaves a lot in the field compared to the NH.

This is our first peice of NH equipment on the farm.

Looks like you got a good buy on that one. I had to give $1600 for that 881 CaseIH at an auction.
I probably wouldn't have done it if I didn't still have the corn head and a bunch of parts here off the old 781 that will fit it.

The New Holland equipment I have has been pretty good over the years. I remember my dad traded our Bearcat green chopper for an older New Holland model 36 green chopper, and the first time we used it we were impressed how much smoother it was over the bearcat and also their was no problem filling the back of the feeder rack anymore.
I think you guys did good, hope it serves you well.

I worked for a farmer in high school with a 892. It was a good machine, not much for breakdowns. He ran it with a 4490 and 4494 Case tractors. One time on first crop we could not get it to chop, was down in the lowest gear and still riding the clutch. Turned out the inner smooth feed roller got a dent and hay was wrapping up binding between it and the cutterbar. Good luck

You got a good deal. Especially this year chopping equipment is selling high priced. You just need to go over it and make sure it is field ready. They had pretty good capacity and usually where a good trouble free chopper.

I think the main challenge will be getting it ready in time for corn. I gotta figure out the wiring, make sure the motors are good, and then figure out the gear box.

I also gotta free up the sharpener. I can pull it across, but when it gets to where it's supposed to adjust itself down it binds up.
