Bought grain cart

I mentioned last week that there were 2 carts nearby for sale. They were on a dealer's lot who is closing up Sept. 30. Both were sold when I got there Friday. Consolation prize was a JD (UFT) 400 I bought from an older fellow who is retiring from farming. Wagon is in great shape, excellent paint, augers aren't worn out, new gearbox, chains, & sprockets & 18.4x30 tractor tires instead of 14.00x20's they came with. He ran it for me and it turns smooth. Auger shield slides easy as does the cleanout door on the bottom. No holes in the auger anywhere. Not very new, I know, and 2 augers instead of one side or corner auger isn't ideal, but it should be good enough for my operation for a few years. Looking forward to trying it out.

Nice.

As a one person operation, I'm not sure an auger cart would ever help me much. Cheaper to buy another gravity wagon to park on the field edge.... the elevator is only a mile from my driveway, but when times get busy and we have bigger yields and folks get ever faster combines, the line at the elevator can be over an hour.

I can spend more time hauling/ unloading grain than combining it, and as mentioned, one person operation....... too small to afford employees, and so I make it work. Oh, wife helps a lot, but she doesn't want to be on the highway nor responsible for the combine and that's fair enough.

I totally understand. I'm essentially a one-man show, too. My oldest daughter helps when she can, but she started college last month, my younger daughter is still in high school and could/would help, but is allergic to everything, and my boy is 11. He helps all he can and will do more as he gets older. We used to have an elevator just 5 mi from my farms, but it closed last Dec. Now I'm trucking 30 miles to sell grain. I need more storage. One reason for the auger wagon is to haul across the creek - got 2 farms that have farm ground across a creek. Ok to cross w/a wagon (carefully), but no way to get a tandem axle truck there. Have had to use a transport auger and dump gravity wagons into the truck previously when I couldn't load the truck from the combine.

I would actually like to have one, but just can't justify it for my conditions. Would be nice in some situations tho. Sounds like you have a good plan and need for it.

Good neighbor got a modest one a couple years ago now that his son is old enough that works well for a modest dairy operation and timeliness, and the other neighbor has one on tracks about the size of my grain bins....
