Affordable Woods 214-1 cutter gearbox

Hi everyone, My Woods 214-1 (14' cut, 3 gearboxes, 2 sets of cutter blades) mower has a cracked outer gearbox. I don't know the condition of internal parts, but it was leaking oil for a while before a stump finished it off. The other gearboxes are fine, and the deck is in good condition so I would like to fix the broken box with a new or used one. A search has produced no results for any used boxes. A new box complete with internals will cost over $2,700 (too much for me). A new case w/o the gears is about $800 but I am concerned about the old parts matching the new case exactly so that I don't end up with more problems. Does anyone out there have any advice on where to find a good used box or experience putting old parts in a new case? If your internals are not too bad I would say that reusing your gears and putting in new seals and bearings would be alright as long as you gear clash is adequate. Shimming can help if need be. You just don't want your gears to tight or too far apart. I have changed quiet a few boxes and internal parts with little problem.
On another not how bad is the box. Cracked or completely demolished? If not real bad a good machine shop may be able to patch or weld your cast again. If done proper it would be a lasting solution. Just my 2cts worth on the subject. Good luck, Lyle

Thanks for your input Lyle. In the past I was told that it was very important to get the gears to mesh just right or trouble would ensue. That is why I've steered away from going into a gearbox until now. There is not much choice this time. lol The old casting has a split on the bottom where the bearing and seal go. I'll go ahead and take the gears out and take it to a couple of welding shops and let them take a look at it. I'm kind of doubtful that it can be repaired but I'm no expert. If all else fails, a new box, bearings, and seals, with the old gears might be worthwhile and something that I can tackle myself. I don't want to overspend on an old machine. I'll report back when I know more on the project. Mark

Where are you located? I have a couple gear boxes and would sell one cheaper than a dealer. I just bought a woods 214 and it came with three spares I was researching the mower and came across your post.
