John Deere 4010 hydraulic pump rebuild question

I have the New Generation 4010. The hydraulic pump above the front tires is leaking oil all over front tires. What is the problem, are the seals shot and in need of the pump being rebuilt? What is the cost of a pump rebuild? Any insight would be appreciated.

How hard is it to rebuild? Is it something that I could do myself? Or is it something I should have a pump shop/tech. do?

More than likely the pump shaft seal is leaking which requires pump to be disassembled. If your tractor has ever had a pump seal drain line added this line could be leaking.

ship it to me and I will re-seal it and bench test it.

If you have a service manual, a clean place to work, and take your time it is real easy. I have done several of them, it would be real nice to bench test them first to confirm that everything is correct, but then again I have never had an issue resealing one. I would replace the input shaft since it most likely has a grove worn into it where the seals rest.

Hay Maker is right,, the hardest part is getting them in and out of the tractor, and if the shaft has a strong groove in the seal area it will not hold a seal for long. If you need to take it in and out a couple times to get it right you will realize how nice the test bench is...ether way we will help you with it..

Yes as Don stated, the front seal of the pump leaks "behind" the front tires, make sure you can see where the leak is coming from,, also check the short oil line on top of the pump..

Does your tractor have a rubber bleed hose running down from under the top of oil cooler?
It loops down in front of pump and behind steering motor.

Thanks for the input/advice. I will check these
things out. Just put a clutch in the tractor, now
hydraulics are leaking.

I had a tractor I was sure that the pump was leaking so I started it and put a piece of cardboard up by the leak and it got wet on the other side Mine was a rusted steering line.
