1520 GAS WATER IN OIL

Need some advice here. I have a JD 1520 gas. Accidentally left straight water in cooling system last winter. Started it up, immediately noticed knocking, shut it down. Found oil looked like chocolate milk. Drained oil and dropped oil pan. Looking up into bottom of engine I don't make out any cracks in the block or problems with the bottom of the sleeves. How do I figure out how the water is getting in the crankcase? I'm thinking head gasket pushed out, cracked head, sleeve gasket(s) damaged, or cracked block. How do I isolate the problem most easily? Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Fill it back up with water and see where it is leaking! If It started the noise immediately upon start up and you did not run it long enough to get the engine hot, it drained under gravity alone. If you fill the radiator back up and it starts pouring you can look back up in the block and find the source. You might also screw the spark plugs out before you add the water, if it runs out of the plug holes you have a problem in the head or head gasket. You might also want to remove the valve cover and see if there are any cracks under there. You are probably looking at a cracked block or head, I have not seen many cracked blocks(I live in the south) but in all the vehicles I have seen damaged by this the head gasket was the least of the concerns. Good luck!

Get a hand pump up pressure tester on the radiator and put some pressure in it and watch for leaks. Do this wit hit shut off and oil pan off.

Take both radiator lines off plug the bottom line tight. Reduce the top line down so you can hook up your garden hose. Have somebody turn on the hose wile you look & listen for air first followed by water. Turn the hose on a little at a time and see what you get. If you got water in the oil already there's probably no use in taking off the intake & exhaust manifolds but you can if you like. Good luck.
