John Deere JD400 backhoe info, value, etc.

Hey guys, I'm new to the site. I love vintage equipment, tractors, welding machines, etc. I've been looking at getting a backhoe for my property. I was using my neighbors early Case 530 for a while and liked the size of it, and digging ability. So I saw a John Deere jd400 backhoe for sale today, not sure on the year or the hours since the meter apparently doesn't work. It has new buckets front and rear, and some new pins and bushings. Also has a 100 mph new yellow paint job haha. The farmer said he thinks it's an early 70s model witb the 4 cyl diesel. I'm not too familiar with John Deere tractors, so I'm not sure what it's worth? Let me know what you guys think, and what kind of price is run of the mill for these. Is it worth getting this model backhoe, or should I pass it bye? Thanks in advance

I would suggest to get TLB to operating temp then check for engine blow-by and how hyd's function. Closed-center hyd's such as this model has can be a problem to repair if hyd's don't operate properly. Location of TLB can affect value.

Like Jim said, check out the engine and the hydraulic system. Look for coolant in the engine oil, and water in the trans oil. The engines, while a good design that lasted into the early 2000s, can get
leaking between the piston sleeve and block. The transmission can get rain water in it if the rubber boots around the shifters are torn. This water can cause things like the brake linings to dteriorate and
mess up the hydraulic suction screen, etc.

Look the hoe over for cracks and leaks. If it is decent, I'd think $5-6 k should buy it. A 400 (if it is not a 401 or 401C) is a late 60's early 70s machine, so it has been around a while. If you find
something big wrong, I'd keep shopping.
