I got a flywheel on a late B I needed to replace because it had a crack in the splines. Got one with the same part number cast into the flywheel but its different and wont go on. The splines are slightly different plus it doesn't have the deep grove for the flywheel screw. The original is in black and the replacement in gray to tell them apart. What do I have here? The parts manual doesn't list two different ones plus they're the same part number according to the casts. The replacement also doesn't have the exhaust/ignition casts.

That's interesting, I've been wondering the same thing on the one I bought too. My old one is just like your new one. However, they both fit on the crank the same.

I wonder if JD changed the spline depth in the B2461R flywheel casting at one time??

I noticed the male splines in my old flywheel never went very deep in the female splines on the crank.

Take the locator screw out of your B crank and put the flywheel on, in won't hurt a thing. That flywheel is for a later B. If it has timing marks on it it's for a 50 and will still work fine. I have a late B with a 50 flywheel on it. I put a 50 flywheel cover on and used a timing light to time it through the little window, then I put the B cover back on.
