John Deere H

Does anyone know why and or how my H flywheel timing marks could get so far off. About a fifth of a turn of the flywheel. Everything seems tight.

It couldn't have slipped. tight or not.
Do the V marks line up (flywheel & crank)?
Remember to turn the sleeve so the pin in
the flywheel hits it's slot.

Agree with D- and Mike M. When the "LH IMPULSE" mark aligns with the mark on the cover on the side of the transmission, the LH piston should be at top dead center and that's when the mag impulse should fire the LH spark plug. There are 10 splines in the flywheel and crankshaft which means that is it possible to mount the flywheel in 36 degree (1/10 of a turn) increments. So if your timing marks appear to be 1/5 of a turn off, it might mean that your flywheel is out of position by two splines (72 degrees, or 1/5 of a turn).

Your Governor/cam gear could be out of time if not correctly installed with the crank. If someone did not line up the 'dots' on the cam gear and governor gear when assembling, that would explain it. The governor will 'impulse' out of sequence if not timed. Has to be one or the other, if the V marks are lined up on the flywheel and crank. Hope this helps, it is worth checking if all the obvious fails. Gagor.
