New John Deere 3020 Implements

I was talking about this with a friend the other day and curiosity is getting to me. If I would have purchased a brand new 3020 diesel in the 60’s what would I have gotten with it? (Model number wise) I’m guess a set 4-14’s or 3-16’s F145? What model of disk? I assume a 10-12’ disk? Surely something heavier than the ol AWs? Would I have gotten a field cultivator or other finishing tool? These are the things I find interesting and if anyone has stories I’d love to hear them.

I grew up on a gas 3020 and I have always had a soft spot for them ever since!

I pull an ih 15 foot disc with 15 foot harrow behind a
diesel 3020 powershift or a 14 foot lely roterra
power harrow . According to the 1961 issue of
modern farming John Deere full line catalog you
would be pulling model f100 series plow 4 bottom
mounted or a f600 series drawn plow . 825 series
two way Plow a number 20 drawn subsoiler one
shank . A 100 series tool carrier / chisel Plow . A
1200 series kilefer offset disk . A model cca drawn
cultivator or a c-7 mounted cultivator . Model ll-a
press drill . A John Deere no.8 or 8w or 9 or 9w
mower . A no. 42 pto combine . That?s 1961 so
things may have changed a little buy 63 64

F145H semi-mounted plow.

950 roller harrow.

1240 corn planter

BB grain drill

483 mower conditioner

50 side mount mower

34 forage harvester

214 forage wagon

224 square baler

44 manure spreader

300 corn picker (after 1968)

237 corn picker (for narrow front 3020)

The next horizon for collecting in my mind but I seem to be in the minority in feeling that way. I'd love to go to a show and see more than 2 or 3 implements there. People will get tired of seeing endless 3020's and 4020's just like they got tired of A's and B's.

I completely agree NY986 I thought it would be a neat display to collect “all” the equipment that you would bought with a 3020 in my area when they were new to farm with. Of course I’m sure some would be very hard to obtain but for the most part I see these implements for sale for less than $1,000 a piece. Put a $100 paint job on a piece I still think your ahead collect several 2 cylinders to the tune of $2,000-2,500 a piece. Just my thoughts but I’m probably wrong.

The drawn CCA Cultivator was just one row of shovels correct?

It might take a while to find a 44 spreader or 483 M-C (I just saw one on Ebay) but the rest could be found in short order. Yes, you might have to run a 100 miles or so to do it quick like. There was a darn nice JD front mount 6 row cultivator that a Mennonite had for sale not too long ago. The nice thing around my region is that there are still some pretty nice barn finds that come along.

I wish I was faster, I just saw a 483 in awesome shape on the St. Cloud craigslist for $500, but by the time I called she was gone. I may be wrong but I think it would be more interesting to see a tractor with a bunch of implements around it all painted up that just a bunch of pretty M's and H's or A and B John Deere's..

I most everything you mentioned. The baler is a 24t not a 224. Cornplanter is a 494a and the forage boxes are 122 chuckwagons instead of 214's. Have 2 44 spreaders one single beater and one triple beater. My mower is a 485 not a 483. Could also add 400 grinder mixer, 50 sheller for 237 picker, 68 grain cart. Tom

I know that I have it only partially covered. I wish I had the Long Green Line Catalogs that used to come to dad from back then.

The first hydraulic disc on our farm pulled by a 3020 tricycle gasser = a 12? IH #37disc, JD RG4 four row cultivator. Nice seat, fenders, power
steering, lights, tachometer. What more could a boy ask for? Always jealous of the neighbor?s dualed up 4020!!

tomstractorsandtoy could you post some pictures of that 485 mower?

The 483 is the first one I've ever seen in an actual picture.

This is the c7 mounted and cca drawn type
cultivator

Deere used to publish a yearly catalog with the whole "Long Green Line." I have two copies of the one from '68- which has all the implements available. Unfortunately, it's somewhere out of reach at the
moment, and I can't remember the name! The oldest ones were called "Power Farming" and then I think "Modern Farming". I can't recall if it was still "Modern Farming" in '68? Or "The long Green Line in
'68?" Somebody here will know.

See if you can find one on ebay or somewhere... it will have all the implements, and pictures of 3020s, 4020s, 5020s etc pulling them. Most everybody got d a lot of the common ones, but a few that got missed
(or that I missed)- 37 hay conditoner, various rakes, 46 and 48 loader, I think a couple of corn shellers were still available in the '60's, 65 forage blower, 112 and 115 chuckwagons, a number of wagon
gears, the barge box, cultivators, beet diggers, mounted cotton strippers, etc.

I bought a 71 4020[2600 hours] from an estate that had bought a 4 row planter, new rotary hoe , 4/16 plow , 1100 22 1/2 field cultivator,a new 20 ft tandem disc,a 48 loader, all new and only farmed for about 6 more years. The tractor, loader and planter were in shed the rest set out. There was actually a 60 JD with 227 picker that only had 641 hours. All bigger equirtment than a 3020 could handle but unique to all have been bought in 1971.

It makes me happy that I have seen some recent and in very good condition 3020 vintage items as a shedded F145H 4 bottom plow, 400 grinder mixer, 216 forage wagon on a 1065A gear, 1240 planter, the aforementioned mounted cultivator, and 34 chopper at auctions. The sad part is I did not have the money to bring them home. I want to say the 1969 catalog was LGL as I drooled over it plenty as a young boy but it was nearly 50 years ago so I will check Ebay just to be sure.

I have about 80% or more of the sales brochures for Deere from 1960 to the mid 70's. Also have two dealer sales manuals as well as 4 or 5 dealer price books. Fun reading and lots of information. Tom

It is clear in the back of the machine shed with the 920 moco parked right in front of it. The 485 is the same as the 483 except it has inter-meshing steel rolls instead of the rubber and metal used on the 483. Like a 22 and a 32 crimper the rolls are the difference. Mine needs a gearbox but I have one here off a 780 windrower just have not taken time to fix and after owning a discbine you do not even look at sickle machines. I do have some pics in my old computer but not sure how to get them to this one. Tom

On the “John Deere Free Auction site” on Facebook there are several different years 65-67-68 I know of auctioning right now.

I forgot that same family had two new chuck wagons an RG4 cultivator,38 mower and pull behind crimper .It was like they ordered 1 of everything. Not being shedded took its toll on the paint and chuck wagon actually had rusted floor.I helped the sister sell everything. Thru the years when something became wore out they would disassemble it and put it in a row of iron. They were cattle feeders and I assume 1970 must have been a good year.A few years ago I sold the iron pile and it brought $250 a ton about twice what iron is today and they hauled it.There was close to $20K in that pile that she just wanted gone as it didn't look good. There were actually 2 Case older 600 S.P combines just sitting outside in grove.Sold one to collector. One mans trash can be another mans treasure.I sold the 4020D and it brought $23K with original tires at auction. It hadn't been started in 20 years and we pulled it about 5 feet and ran great before we changed the fluids and batteries.Once in awhile I have found discs and plows shedded that look like new but usually they are in the way and parked outside to rust away.
