Early 4020 Head installation questions

I am going to be istalling the head on my 1964 ( big injectors) 4020 diesel. I want some expert tips so I don't end up with annoying oil leaks near the right rear corner. Head has been plained and valves replaced.
Is it best to install the gasket dry, or should I use a spray on copper head gasket sealer? Should I re-use the old head bolts or buy new? What is the correct / newest torque procedure for the head bolts?

Thank you for your help as I only want to do this once!

I followed the old manual instructions dry gasket ran the engine for 5 hours on the dyno the loosened the head bolts and retorqured em . That?s what the manual said to do that was 15 years ago no leaks so far

New head bolts. I like the torque to yeild bolts because you do not need to re-torque them. Sooner or later every early 4020 will leak at the back corner. It is just the design that was changed on the side console tractors because of that problem. A good job and it will be along time untill it happens. One thing I have been doing on the early tractors with the big injecters is if both the head needs redone and the injecters need rebuilt we will but a pencil injecter head,new pencil injecters and a set of used lines.It usually cost about the same as rebuilding the old injecters ans with ebay there are lots of heads around at reasonable prices. Don't put anything on the gasket. Original bolts were
grade five. If yours are, replace them.
I use the original torque procedure but go to 150# on
retorque.

I use Ultra Black Permatex, very sparingly, along the sides/edges of the gasket and in the back corner. Don't know how many fingers have been in these old tractors and if they got crazy with a buffing wheel along the edge and have removed some casting. chris

New fasteners , new hardened washers , chase the block threads with a tap and clean them. Remove the top thread from the block as it will be raised and is not allowing the head to clamp down the entire gasket across the entire machined surface .

Sounds like I'm buying new bolts! Is the torque pattern and spec the same as the original service manual?

Ask a service manager for a copy of the torques and sequence.

Buy the new torque to yield bolts and the kit will come with instructions. Do not use washers as the new bolts have them made onto the bolt. That is how you tell them from the regular bolts. They are all that my dealer ever sells anymore. Tom
