Steering John Deere 4010

I have a John Deere 4010 that has a lot of play in the steering. you can turn the steering wheel about 3/4 Inch before front wheels move. As you drive down the road wheels will turn slightly one way or the the other. Is my problem in the steering motor or steering valve is there any way to test which is is. Any help or suggestions appreciated. I know the steering motor is a lot of work to remove but not to bad to repair the steering valve easier to get off but costly to rebuilt. Is the steering on this tractor the same as a 4020

I would start with the steer motor and I do them in the frame,, what happens is as the o-rings leak past it lets the pressure on the motor piston relax,, then there is a void in the piston area that lets the wheels hunt,,as this pressure relaxes the steering wheel will turn a bit to renew the pressure..

this involves taking off part of the frame correct. Can the steering motor be rebuilt by me i have good mechanical skills
