Howdy all...looking at a 1936 John Deere B

Howdy all...I've loved that thumpy lump sound of these tractors and there is one for sale near enough me to go buy. The rear tires have air in them and it is supposed to run. The front tires are both flat in the pictures. If it really does run do you think I can drive the front tires up onto my flat bed trailer? Like maybe covering the loading ramps with plywood to make them smother? If necessary I can have a 3000lb winch set up with a snatch block, will that get her up the ramps?

Look forward to talking with all of you.

First post...hope to get to know every one.

Ran when parked or runs now? I've seen them set for years and years with the tires still up. Try airing the tires up. Tires don't last long running on them flat. If it runs, it will drive on a trailer with flat tires. No need to winch it.

To bed I guess...can't even put up the smallest avatar pic I can make...oh well, it was just my old heeler sleeing with her tongue out.

Dad bought a 1940 styled B winter of 1968/'69. Was running at the auction, week later Dad and I went to
pick it up, borrowed the neighbor's NFE tractor dolly, little 2-wheel cart you drive frt wheels onto,
chain tractor down and drive off. We had close to 30 miles to tow it home, both rear tires had tubes
sticking out of holes in them. Dad cranked the flywheel till he couldn't stand up anymore, I cranked it
till I couldn't stand up, then we pulled it down the road a mile turned around and towed it back to
auction site, 2 miles and not a pop! Finally got it to pop a couple times, then got it started, loaded on
dolly, slowly towed it home about 10 mph with engine running to lube the transmission. Dad bought it to
pull our JD R spreader thru our hog finishing building, had a drive less than 6 feet wide, about 69-70
inches. I tried to use it to rake hay, haul water to hog padtures, it didn't even run smooth enough to
run our 48 ft JD bale elevator, used the Farmall M on that, not because we need 50+ HP but because it was
smooth! I'm surprised JD sold another tractor after that B was built. Reverse seemed about 6 mph, road
gear, 4th, about 4 mph.
Neighbor got a 630 about the same time. I don't remember him EVER using it on anything with the pto.
We had a JD R diesel for about four months spring of 1964. Only ever ran the pto to get the live hyd to
work. Township road commissioner bought it to run a big 5 ft Heavy-Duty rototiller to tear up roads. It
did a better job of tearing up the PTO on the tractor. 3 pto's in three years, it got traded on an Oliver
770 diesel that ran that rototiller great for over 10 years, I ran it couple summers 1973 & '74.

NOT a fan of the Putt-Putt. I liked running our 4010-D, got tired of working on it all the time.

New people cannot post pictures till they have been on the site for a while. As for driving it with flats yes to load it will be just fine. Shoot we once drove an 8N we got around and use the 3 point to load a bunch of equipment that came with it and it had 4 flats and they would not air up. Got the equipment loaded then loaded the tractor

Thanks for all your comments....all my goofy posts were me trying to figure out this site. Glad to hear that it should be able to go up the trailer ramps with flat front tires. I'll put a sheet of plywood on top of the ramp to help those flat tires get up the ramp.

I'll also try to get the mount I'm working on that will let me mount the winch on the trailer just in case. Otherwise I have to block the trailer and put my winch in my truck's receiver hitch.

Do the front tires have tubes or are they bead sealed like modern tires?

You needed somebody to know how to work on a tractor. What you are saying is that somebody did not know what they were doing. The 2 cylinder Deeres were smooth running and you did not notice any variation in PTO speed as that was also very smooth. I had 38 A, 46 B, 49 B, 50 AR, and 51 A. Would have loved to have been able to have more. Allis dealer knew we had the Deere and when the shoe busted on the Allis combine he went on a rant about rough PTO speed on the tractor causing that. He shut up and never said a word about it after he realized it was tha AC engine mounted on the toung of the AC combine that had the problem and if it was a vibration problem then that 4 cylinder AC engine had way more vibration than the 2 cylinder Deere had.

The thumpy thump is at idle. I know engines well, just not this exact model. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
