Just bought another 72 4020 syncro. Less than 4000 one owner hrs. It's factory narrow front and has a loader on it. The hood's a little banged up in front, but other than that it's a really nice original. What to do. Do I fix the hood the best I can and leave original or fix anything I find wrong and repaint. I have another original 72 syncro wfe with almost the same hrs. Just thought it would be neat to have two exacts with different options in original come.

It's your tractor to do with what you want. Just my personal opinion would be how bad is a little banged up. Also if it's the original paint just how much is left. One person's idea of "nice original" might be different than another's. It's only original once so if it's really as nice as you say I'd probably leave it alone. If I did do something I would lean towards fixing the hood.

I think I?ll fix and maybe repaint the hood. The rest of the paint should buff out pretty well. Thanks for the input.

I have seen some really good jobs of fixing the front of 10/20 series hoods also some not too good. The special tool from Sundahl is a big help to get it correct. His screen tool is even better. To find a 72 with 4000 hours is somewhat rare. We saw what the one with 2006 hours brought at Virgil Kuhlmans sale[$37500] for a nice original[not power shift]. The problem with painting other than wheels its hard to stop. I have a mint 71 and the decals were faded and I media blasted the panels so it would look nice and hard to match color and I cant call it all original.I just sold a 4900 hour 4320 and guy that bought it was thriiled that it was 100% original except for wheels. He told me he had looked at several that were painted but wanted one he knew was nice underneath. Its amazing what Renusit from Malco can do if the paint is not scratched or gone. If a paint job is average it doesn't add much to the value.Better to spend a little more and do it right or leave it.

They are only original once. Original paint is getting harder to find and seems to be catching on with folks. Be hard pressed to paint an original one.

I'd be really suspicious of a 46 year old tractor with "original" paint. Dad bought a '63 4010 in December 1968, by April '69 when it went to the field for the first time it had 4 brand new tires, tuned up, new paint and decals, seat still looked experienced for the hours the tractor had. It must have been shedded every night by the first owner, seat and paint still really nice when it was sold in August '72.

I'd be looking at things that would be masked off for painting, Belts, hoses, serial number plates, gauge faces, dash, lights, tires, mufflers, wire harnesses, etc.
