Recently my early 4020 D has started having a steering issue. Ive had it over 10 years and the wheels have always turned all the way to the left when you first start the tractor. After turning the steering wheel all the way right, the wheels would slowly turn to the right and everything was fine afterwards.

Recently, after the tractor has warmed up, the wheels are slow to turn sometimes, like I have to wait for them to catch up, and other times they turn real fast with the slightest turn of the steering wheel.

Is this a symptom of the steering valve under the steering wheel needing service or perhaps a pump that is weak needing service or both?

I would re-seal the steer motor first,,chances are it has never been re-sealed,,and think how many turns it has made in the past 50 years.. I can walk you through it when your ready..

Hey Tim,

I resealed the steering motor about 6 years ago. It was leaking badly and you walked me through it. Do you think that could still be the issue? Possibly, an internal leak in the steering motor since it is not leaking externally anymore?

Yes, they will leak internally first, and as they leak more they leak to the outside... they get Wobbly on the road and need to correct themselves when the start up.. The valve can also leak a bit internally and cause the same things to happen..but the steer motor is what to go to first..
