my neighbor has a massey 35 I think its a 1957 model. he"s pullin a finish mower with it. but the pto don"t spin fast enough to run the mower well. it has different settings for the pto. can any one explain how its supposed to work. or what the problem may be.

Hope he is not using ground drive PTO, that would be slow. Engine PTO is 540 at 1500 engine RPM if I remember right, make sure he is using engine PTO position.

I agree ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

So what gear is he in? At 1500 engine rpm, in first gear low range, the blades would whip around like a dream. In 4th hi, the tractor will travel faster than the mower blades can turn. Ground pto is like watching the grass grow- about one shaft rotation for each axle rotation. you'd know if you were in GPTO... as Roy said, it's cast into the lever housing too.

If i'm thinking right, as was said, the little lever on left side controls PTO speed to match ground speed, in the forward position, and as has been said it matches PTO speed to engine speed in rear position. HOWEVER I'm thinking there's a danger, if it's like my MF, when in the forward position there's a danger if you try to shift gears going from forward to back up to the rear; I think my manual warns about damaging transmission. Probably ought to get a manual if you can.

If the tractor has a single stage clutch when using the pto that runs off the engine when you push in the clutch the tractor will keep moving as long as the pto shaft is still spinning because the engine pto is being delivered through the transmission. If it's a single stage clutch he needs a pto over-run clutch that goes in between the pto shaft on the tractor, and the pto shaft to the mower.

A lot of great info thanks for sharing, i am new to owning our MF35, when we got it , it had no such exterior clutch with the mower it came with. My question is does my tractor need that, We set the PTO in motion with a lever on the left side has a low S High gears and a few gears on the trans i believe 3.

Also before i forget does that mean we can't reverse with that tractor when mowing like someone wrote? Got me thinking..

Can someone quick reply when you get a chance.. Pete

The older tractors like the 35 usually had a ground pto that was for old implements that required the pto speed to match the ground speed. The pto lever on the left hand side of the transmission (all the way forward is usually gound pto, middle neutral, and all the way back is either the engine pto (single stage clutch), or live pto (2 stage clutch) If it has a 2 stage clutch you should be able to push the clutch pedal down about 1/2 way, and the tractor should stop moving, and the pto will stay running. When you push the pedal all the way down it will disengage the secondary pto clutch. The second stage of a two stage clutch is usually harder to down. If you have a 2 stage clutch you don't need a over run clutch on the pto.
