I am going to change the fluid on My MF 35 .
I have noticed that the fluid has a sulfur smell to it and curious what would create the Sulfur smell ?

What is the best way to make sure that everything is cleaned out properly?

Do I need to drain overnight and do I just drain through one drain at a time?

Flush with diesel or?

I am going to replace with Mineral oil gear oil I got from Napa.
They sure are proud of that stuff !!

Mineral oil has a sulfur smell to it, if it has any water in it, it will look cloudy. If it doesn't have water in it, it will look clear. There should be two drain plugs, one on the transmission, and one on the rearend housing, pull them both. Some sludge may come out with the oil, if its a lot I usually flush it with some diesel. After all the oil drains put the drain plugs back in, put like 2 or 3 gallons of diesel in, let it sit for a few minutes (don't run the tractor) then remove both drain plugs. If sludge is still coming out after the first flush, flush it again with some more fresh diesel. You won't get all of it (you'll get most of it), and you shouldn't need to flush it more than twice.

Thank you much

Yes Napa is proud of that GL-1 mineral oil, non detergent oil 90 weight,
I bought 8 gals to change the differential oil, hydraulic and gear box oil in my 1957 TO35 tractor,

I just hooked to a plow disc took the oil tractor out and got the gearbox oil as hot as possible,
Then came straight to the woods lot and drained out the oil, be sure to have plenty of buckets available, it took about four hours to stop
draining,

My tractor was running good, lift working fine, so I just added back the required oil,
Note to file: you need to add the oil back slow as it has to go up and around stuff inside the gearbox to find its happy level,
If you add the oil to fast (just do not do it), take your time, go talk to mama bear, then come back and add some more,

Working the lift a few times, drive the tractor around in the barn yard, then wait till morning and check it again,
Much easier to add a little more than to have to drain excess out, you Do Not want it getting on your clutch plate,
******Good luck, if you do add that diesel fuel, better be sure you get it all out, not sure what it might do to the bearings in transmission, note
they are bronze bearings,******

Considering it holds something like 7 gallons of oil, what diesel that will be left will be very little in comparison to the amount of oil. Any little bit of diesel left may very, very minutely reduce the weight of the oil, but won't hurt anything.

I agree with Maxwell. However, if you do fill it too fast, everything will look great until it settles. Then all the excess will find its way out the dipstick hole and make a
very large mess for Aaron to clean up off the garage floor.... I'd hate to know how much money I absorbed with kitty litter. Knowledge is power.
