Check/Replace Hydraulic filter on Massey 135

My Massey 135 is live PTO, clutch response, Gas 4cyl 1966-according to serial no. What should I know - to do this filter change myself? No problem removing bolts, etc. Old trans oil is drained and I have the required replacement oil from Massey dealer. My concern is disconnecting and reconnecting the lever linkage. Any advice appreciated. Dave

I can't lift a 6foot round bale. Can hardly get it off the ground. When I bought the tractor a year ago it worked fine. The trans oil was dirty then like it is now. I thought since I had to change the trans oil anyway, I might as well check the filter too. At least if it's not the oil and/or filter I would have at least got both of those done.

It's not difficult to do. When you remove plate and shifter fork try to keep the orientation same so fork slides back in the same way in groove of gear. May need to tilt it some to go back in. The screen has wire attached that you cut to allow removal. Wire is attached to small flat plate. Make sure you reattach wire after you clean screen, if you don't the screen can later come loose without wire to secure it and you're in trouble. I use a long needle plier from my fishing tackle box for access wire. Tight fit for hand but can clean out grunge on bottom a little also. After you reassemble try to shift to see if all ok,with engine OFF put pto shifter in neutral you should be able to turn pto shaft easy by hand. If can't turn shaft, it's not aligned right and do over. The others here can help you more if needed too.

Just remove the round side cover where the pto lever is.
