602 Power Steering Valve

MMDEL, I need your advice! The valve was leaking so I replaced the fork and o-rings. It quit leaking but still doesn"t work. The I&T book gives me no clues as to what I did wrong or where to go from here......

Help! Thanks! Marty

As soon as I read the title of your post I was going to suggest to talk to Delbert. He knows a lot about those systems. In the meantime you could loosen the 4 allen head bolts slightly and try adjusting the valve body on the housing with the tractor running. You may be able to center the valve. Sometimes it takes up or down movement and sometimes a little forward or back. The bolts don't need to be loosened much, just enough to be able to move the valve slightly. A large pair of adjustable pliers is handy for that. It helps to have another person to run the steering wheel for you.

Marty;
Did it work OK before you took it apart? And I asume you put it back together the way it came apart. One other thing you should have done is to replace the sleeve the fork pivots in as well as the fork. If it worked before and you didn't change any shims from where they were. What Alan is telling you is correct. It should work. Does it turn better in one direction than the other, or doesn't it preform at all??

I figured it was correct. I was just passing along the information I got from you one time Delbert. ;)

It only worked right before. I did not replace the sleeve, but have one. (i didn't see an easy way to get it out, if not absolutley necessary.) thanks for the advice, i'll give it a try.

I think the sleeve or bushing is just pressed in. Might be a good idea to measure where it is at in the bore so you can install the new one the same. If you only have assist when you turn to the right, when you turn the steering wheel to the right the separator if I remember correctly, moves slightly rearward which through the fork movement, would move the assist valve forward. In turning the steering wheel to the left, the separator should move forward which would move the assist valve rearward. So Im guessing you don't have enough movement in that direction. You can try moving the assist valve slightly rearward to gain a little more movement....I think lol. It can be a little hard to move as the steering lines limit movement. They are tricky to get set so they work equal.

As Alan says it is tricky. You can fiddle tighten, loosen, tighten, loosen, and when you think you have it right and torque down all the bolts it changes. I snug the bolts and give it a light rap with a hammer. which ever way it needs to go. till it is right. Yes the bushing is pressed in. Depends how much movement there is with the new lever. any free play between the bushing and the lever makes a big difference out on the end of the fork in the travel of the valve.
