5-Star Power steering leak

Hello,

I started my 5-Star this weekend, to find oil gushing out under the radiator shroud and down the right side of the pedestal.
Thinking it was the right-hand power steering tube leaking, I removed it, but it has tested OK.

So now I am thinking oil was being pushed out the vent hole. Since I have the right-hand line removed, I am contemplating replacing all the sector piston and end plug O-rings, but I have some questions:

1) Can one run the sector piston far enough out to change the O-rings on it on each side, or does it have to come completely out?
2) Does AGCO carry these O-ring parts, or should I find O-Rings the same size on my own?
3) Is this type of symptom usually a sector piston seal leak, or should I be prepared to go into the power steering valve itself too?

Any insight on how best to do this job will be appreciated!

Duane

Its been over 10 years since I did that to a couple Jetstars. On them, if I recall correctly, I had to drop the sector gear and main output shaft out the bottom of the case, then push the rack gear/piston out one side. You probably need a manual, at least an I & T manual for that unit.

I got my seals an O-rings from Welters in Verona MO. 417-498-6496 (I think)

I think, if I remember correctly, when I did my M5 I removed the stop bolt (?) and was able to get the piston out far enough to install O rings. Just make sure you keep the steering unit centered or you will turn farther one direction than the other. MMDEL on here might be able to give you some good pointers.

Alan is correct. If you get your hands on an IT manual for any of these models, the procedure is detailed. Agco has the parts as far as I know.

Curt is correct. Go by the manual. Not necessary to remove sector gear. Unless the seal is leaking and you want to replace it. Remove the stop bolt like Alan said. Replace seals like the book says so as to not damage them. The most important part is to make sure you get it centered, so it turns the same distance in both directions. Just to be sure that is the problem, remove the fluid level check plug on the right side of the steering housing before you tear it apart. If it is over full and gushes out, it no doubt is. if not there is something else going on.

Dear MMDEL,
I had oil gushing out what I now believe to be the vent hole (not the right steering line, as I first thought), so I am pretty sure the steering housing is full.
Funny how it seemed to happen all of a sudden though, I guess I'll get a look at the sector piston seals when I get them out!

Thanks,
Duane

Just to add, be careful installing the small gaskets on the end cap. They like to roll over upon installation.
