I did the worst ever, 206 and 220 water pumps

I did the worst ever this evening, trying to get things ready for spring planting and the water pump on one of my 302s went out.
I've rebuilt probably a dozen of these water pumps before......
I didn't put the time into soaking the retaining wire with oil and bumping the bearing back and forth like I should have and know to do.....

The result is that I broke the retaining wire off, about a half an inch into the housing.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks on how to get the broken piece of wire removed?

Back in the '90s, I was able to get one out by using a short piece of lawnmower throttle cable wire to drive out the old wire. I can't
remember how I held it, probably with vice grips as close to the hole as possible. And probably going the other direction, not against the
end that broke. It also seems like I sawed the access slot a bit longer at some point during that episode. Do the penetrating oil soak, the
bump the shaft back and forth, etc. first.

I also used the lawnmower cable wire for the new clip.

Joe Pro,
My method is simple, and fast. First you disassemble the bearing assembly by pulling the seals and ball retainers. Everything but the outer race will fall out. Set the housing where the center hole has a through hole for blow to pass. Now take the cutting torch and cut a vertical slot in the race. The steel race will disintegrate first and the iron housing will not be harmed. After cooling you just tap the outer race out. A quick trip to the sandblaster and you are ready to rebuild. I personally use blue Locktite on the bearing and skip the wire lock. MM stopped putting the wire port on the later pumps as they went to Locktite in later years.
Happy Motoring.

I also use choke cable for the replacement wire.

Charlie, I will give that a try and see how I make out.

I have heard that in later years they used Locktite, but this pump is off of a 1970 U 302 and had never been replaced.
It had the wire.
I've never seen the pumps without the wire hole.
