It is not necessary at all. We have used a U as an auger tractor for decades and leave it idling between loads with the clutch disengaged.

Be sure to grease the Throw out collar through the door on the left side once every day or two or three. Depending on use. In most cases it hasn't been greased for a while. After your first lube only give it one shot or you will have a pile of grease in the belly of the tractor. Book says once a day (roughly) 10 Hrs. It only rotates inside the collar when it is engaged. So when it is idling as you asked it is actually standing still. Only the pilot bearing in the flywheel (it is only a bushing) is working and rarely do you see a bad one. And that is because of the iron horse design of the tractor. The shaft is rigid being held by the transmission and there is no flex between the engine and the transmission so there is basically no pressure on the bearing.

PS; If you put it in neutral and engage the clutch you are actually wearing out many more parts!!!
