ZA trans/rearend trouble

I have a ZA that will not pull itself in 5th, the lower the gear the easier on the engine, anyone with experience think I have a trans problem or a rearend/differential problem? seems good in reverse. Thanks in advance

When the UTS had that problem it was a failing ball bearing on the left bull pinion shaft. The ball separator had come apart and all the balls went to one side of the shaft. No remains of the separator, I guess someone removed all the parts of the separator but was unwilling to fix it right and replace the bearing.

It took me a month of spare time to do it. The transmission top had to come off, the left axle had to be pulled so the bull gear could be dropped out of its pocket in the bull pinion carrier, Then the pinion carrier housing could be pulled from the case, etc.

Just a simple thought but could a brake be dragging? Easy enough to see if one gets warm driving a bit in low gear. Otherwise pull the top cover and take a peek.

Thanks for the answers, I figured I'd have to go into the trans/rearend just wanted to see if anyone had some guidence before taking it all apart

John: A brake would make sense, It could be self energizing going forward and not when you back up. Just a broken spring.
